God Is Able

The telephone call was a bombshell. A somber voice informed me that cancer cells had invaded my bones. After moments of frightened reflection, I thought to pray, remembering the words of Jesus, “Ask, and it will be given you” (Matt. 7:7). As I wondered how to pray, the words “Abide in me as I abide in you” (John 15:4) also came to mind.

We do not have to plead with God. We can always come into God’s presence with thanksgiving and hear God’s wonderful words of love, “Do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you” (Isa. 41:10). God may not give exactly what we ask, but God will respond in love. The mystery and greatness of God are beyond our comprehension. Each day is God’s gift, with the best yet to come.

Whether we have one day or 10 years of life ahead with family and friends, God’s love will sustain us and bless us. Working in us, God “is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine.” I remind myself of this truth day by day.
