These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country… now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” Hebrews 11:13-16We have a dear preacher friend, who for many years has called us “pilgrims”. When we read these verses in Hebrews, we see that we really are “strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” We journey here on earth for only a short time. John 14:2 & 3 are very familiar verses to many, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” We just came back from a summer vacation. It is fun to visit another place for a short while. I want us to think about some of the places mentioned in the Bible. As pilgrims, we can keep a vacation journal and take little visits to some of these places. And then, when our work on earth is done, we will go to our new heavenly home that Christ has prepared for us.
